Around the World in 80 Wines #7

Conquistadors, Missionaries, and the Arrival of Wine Grapes in the New World

Tuesday, January 6 @ 6pm

Join us for part 7 of our 10 part wine seminar series where we uncork the stories behind 80 iconic wines from the world’s most celebrated regions.

Shortly after the discovery of the "New World" Conquistadors and Missionaries rushed to bring wine grapes to this wild and untamed land. The grapes were established 1520's. From this launching point, grapes made their way through Central and South America across the Andes to (modern day) Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Mexico, and into the United States. In this session, we'll follow the wine grape's humble beginnings the New World through its first plantings in North America and discover the grapes and regions that owe their roots in the Americas to these early pioneers.

Join in anytime! Each seminar stands alone so if you've missed one or more of the series segments, you won't be lost. We'll be offering this series on a rotating basis so you'll be able to catch up on the other stops in the near future.

Whether you're a seasoned connoisseur or a curious enthusiast, you'll deepen your knowledge, refine your palate, and gain a deeper appreciation of the artistry in every bottle. Explore the globe, one wine at a time — no passport required.

French Wine Foundations Series Season 2:

#7 - Alsace

Tuesday, Jan 13th @ 6:00 pm

Tucked in the upper Northeast corner of France, Alsace has a complicated past. Fortunately, its wines and appellations are uncomplicated and amazing, showing off depth and complexity in contrast to what should be a cold, difficult place to grow wine grapes (but isn't...) Join us for a 90+ minute taste-and-learn discussion of Alsace and its "Noble" wines and why the grapes here bathe in warmth and sun despite the relatively high northern latitude.

Who was James Busby and why do they call it Shiraz?

Tuesday, January 27 @ 6pm

Join us for part 8 of our 10 part wine seminar series where we uncork the stories behind 80 iconic wines from the world’s most celebrated regions.

In the 1830's a young viticulturist and politician from Scotland made his way to the far reaches of the British Empire in the South Pacific. Among the important items he brought with him on his journey were cuttings of wine grapes from the warm mediterranean region of the Southern Rhône on a hunch they might thrive in the warm Australian farmlands. His hunch paid off and Australia (and New Zealand) have since grown to become world class wine regions. Join us for the story of James Busby's founding of two incredible wine regions on the other side of the world and the wines that captivate enthusiasts around the globe.

French Wine Foundations Series Season 2:

#8 - Provence

Tuesday, Feb 10th @ 6:00 pm

As we approach spring, what better way to wrap up our second season of our French Wine Foundations series than to showcase some of the finest rosé wines in the world. An international symbol of spring and summer outdoor dining and recreation, Provence rosé wines are crisp, dry, and flavorful "gastonomic" wines that pair well with a broad range of summer dining choices from BBQ to seafood. Join us for a 90+ minute taste-and-learn exploration of the region of Provence and the diverse rosé wines (and white and red wines too).

Northern Exposure: The Wines & Regions of the Pacific Northwest

Tuesday, February 24 @ 6pm

Join us for part 9 of our 10 part wine seminar series where we uncork the stories behind 80 iconic wines from the world’s most celebrated regions.

Our second to last stop takes us to the Pacific Northwest where the Cascade Mountains create a paradox where Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz thrive in warm sunny vineyards close to 50 degrees north latitude and Pinot noir and Chardonnay are perhaps at their best in the world much further south around 45 degrees north latitude in the cool (but still pretty sunny) vineyards of Oregon. We'll explain the history of these neighboring wine growing states and why the Cascades play such a vial and paradoxical role in how each region is ideal for the grapes they grow.

Join in anytime! Each seminar stands alone so if you've missed one or more of the series segments, you won't be lost. We'll be offering this series on a rotating basis so you'll be able to catch up on the other stops in the near future.

Who was Junipero Serra and how California Wines became Famous

Tuesday, March 24 @ 6pm

Join us for part 10 of our 10 part wine seminar series where we uncork the stories behind 80 iconic wines from the world’s most celebrated regions.

Saving the best for last -- we're having a Napa/Sonoma vs Paso Robles showdown where we'll be tasting top tier examples of key varietal wines from each region side by side and explain the terroir factors that shape the distinctly different personalities of these wines and decide which region reigns supreme (but we already know the answer is under our feet, right? )
